Este fiul legendarilor comedianti Jerry Stiller si Anne Meara. Parintii nu au incercat sa il tina departe de lumea hollywoodiana, iar Ben si sora lui, Amy, fascinati de popularitatea celor care ii inconjurau, au imbratisat pasiunea pentru actorie de la o varsta frageda. Dar Ben a devenit la fel de interesat de ceea ce se intampla in spatele camerei. A inceput sa joace si sa regizeze propriile filmulete, metoda pe care a propagat-o si in viitorul sau cinematografic.
Inainte de a ajunge pe scena Hollywoodului, Ben a studiat teatru la UCLA. In acest timp a jucat in The House of Blue Leaves si in The Color Of Money.
Si-a facut debutul cinematografic in Empire of the Sun regizat de Steven Spielberg (1987). Imediat dupa aceea a trecut in spatele camerei, regizand Back to Brooklyn pentru MTV. In 1992 a avut propria sa emisiune in cadrul MTV: The Ben Stiller Show. Din pacate ratingul nu a fost destul de ridicat si a fost oprita.
In 1994 produce din propriile economii Reality Bites. In 1996 regireaza The Cable Guy, film care impresioneaza numerosi critici, dar nu si pe fanii lui Jim Carey. There's Something About Mary (1998) il aduce pe Ben din nou in lumina reflectoarelor.
In 2000 apare in doua producti de succes: Keeping The Faith si Meet The Parents. Un an mai tarziu joaca rolul unui manechin zapacit, Zoolander, in filmul cu acelasi nume.
In 2004 cariera sa a suferit o cadere , primind un Razzie Award intr-o situatie record: fusese votat cel mai prost actor in cinci din cele sase filme in care jucase.
