Considerat cel mai bun actor al generatiei sale, Robert De Niro este fiul unor artisti, crescut in New York, alaturi de mama sa, dupa ce parintii sai au divortat cand el avea 2 ani. Poreclit "Bobby Lapte", datorita culorii pielii sale, tanarul De Niro s-a alaturat unei gasti de strada, insa isi croieste un alt drum in viata debutand pe scena la varsta de 10 ani, cand a interpretat la scoala rolul Leului Las in piesa Vrajitorul din Oz. A abandonat scoala la varsta de 16 ani pentru a se dedica actoriei.
Debuteaza in film cu Trois Chambres Manhattan (1965) in regia lui Marcel Carne. De Niro avea sa se intoarca insa la teatru la mijlocul anilor 60. Norocul sau avea sa se schimbe cand De Palma ii propune sa joace in Greetings (1968), care-l conduce mai departe in Hi, Mom! (1970). Robert De Niro a castigat un premiu Oscar in 1974 pentru cel mai bun actor in rol secundar cu The Godfather Part II si in 1980 un alt premiu al academiei pentru cel mai bun actor cu Raging Bull.
